What are Hemorrhoids?

According to an article in National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse or NDDIC, the term hemorrhoids refer to a condition in which the veins around the anus or lower rectum are swollen and inflamed. Hemorrhoids may result from straining to move stool.

Hemorrhoids can either be internal or external. The internal haemorrhoids is usually painless and thus it barely noticeable. However, the external hemorrhoids are soft purple-bluish lumps. They say that the most common cause of this is either congested liver or chronic constipation.  Some other known factors are lack of dietary fiber, food allergies, obesity, carrying heavy objects or obesity. For women, you may have hemorrhoids due to the pressure of growing uterus on the veins. It can also be a very painful one since in pregnancy you are more prone to constipation. It may also arise after childbirth.

Common Symptoms of Hemorrhoids

Rectal itching

Soft lump that can be felt at the opening of the anus

Irregular/incomplete bowel movements

Small amount of blood seen in the stool or on the tissue paper after wiping the rectal area

Home Remedies for Hemorrhoids

There are home remedies for hemorrhoids that can actually relieve you from pain or cure them totally. Here are some of them:

Witch Hazel – you may use witch hazel as a home remedy for hemorrhoids. You can apply witch hazel in cotton to the affected area 3 times a day. This will allow the inflamed veins to shrink.

Aloe Vera – aloe vera is a very effective plant that can be used in most illness (specially skin problems) as home remedies. The gel obtained from the plant can be applied directly on the anus. This will sooth the burning sensation.

Cayenne or Garlic – cayenne or garlic enemas can be used to keep bowels clean.

Petroleum Jelly – doctors have said that you may use petroleum jelly in order to keep bowels clean. You may apply the jelly into the rectum (about ½ inch) by using your finger or cotton swab.

Psyllium Seeds – this is commonly used to help pass stool easily and prevent you from having hemorrhoids. Mix a teaspoon of Psyllium seeds to a glass of water in the morning.
